Dedicated to historical and cultural tourism, Stavelot (7,200 inhabitants) is one of the oldest cities in Belgium. The heart of the town is a protected ancient centre, while the Abbey, which today houses three museums and an archaeological area, is listed as a Walloon heritage site. As for the vast municipal territory (8,500 ha), it is essentially rural and hosts a world-renowned automobile circuit, an amusement park, a game park, 500 km of pedestrian and VTT routes with safety markers, trail circuits, Grande Randonnée (long-distance hiking) paths and two RAVeLs. The HoReCa offers 3,000 tourist beds and numerous guest houses. Several schools and an expanding economic sector (130 local shops, business parks, soft electricity production, etc.) offer the other face of the inhabitants' activity.
With the Stockeu (and the stele dedicated to Eddy Merckx) and the Haute Levée, but also with the passage of two RAVeLs, Stavelot is also a flagship commune for competitive and touring cycling.
